Types of install
For some reason, many salespeople suggest that installing tile on a diagonal makes a room look bigger. I disagree. It certainly makes it look BUSY. Sometimes very distractingly so!
My take is that tile should be functionally attractive. I believe the diagonal installation can even be disturbing, but the floor covering ought not draw the attention of the total room or area.
As for the illusion of increased size, I have come to think it is the long straight lines - the railroad track effect - that makes an area appear larger. The diagonal eliminates that option. And one can come to that judgement - or not - by viewing from a corner when there is tile already laid.

I did like your comment on your post, only that being a tile installer my self I can only agree so much with it (99%), not bad. The idea that a room will look bigger just because the tiles are diagonal or straight is some what crazy. I think that the way the tile should be install relies mostly on the shape of the room, agreed? But ultimately is up to the customer, with of course a little of a professional’s input.

I've never looked for comments even though this is a blog. Sorry. But I agree with you, though something must be said for perception. As I am often addressed about the seeming size change, I had to put in my 2 cents. As for the installation, it has to ultimately be the choice of the customer!
